Xbox, PS3 and other game consoles could become more Wii-like
Will the XBox become the WiiBox? Or the PS3 become the PSWii? No, neither company is initiating a hostile takeover of Nintendo. However, the idea of the other platforms building Wii like capabilities into their designs is ripe for becoming reality. At a recent Game Developers Conference, some pc geeks were showing off a gesture controller and software code which can mimic the functionality of the Wii with an Xbox, PS3 or any other game platform. The controller incorporates “ 1 to 1 mapping of a gesture controller” and translates the movement on screen. It was used to demonstrate what the long awaited, vaporware-like Wii lightsaber controller would look like.
The controller looks like a joystick and gives the user 6 degrees of movement (X, Y, Z, Yaw, Pitch and Roll), and according to reports, performs better and is much more sensitive than the Wii Remote, thereby giving it a better lightsaber like experience in the demo. (Click here to see the video)
The developers, however, are courting hardware game platform manufacturers and have no plans to port the controller to the PC, so those who dig combat from their office cubicle are sadly out of luck.
