Mattel Boldly Going into the R/C market with Star Trek

STRC1

Last week, at the 2008 ComiCon in San Diego, Mattel showed an amazing R/C model based on the Starship Enterprise as part of their new line of Tyco RC Flyer toys. Currently just prototype stages, Mattel is planning four different flying Enterprise toys for release in early 2009. Oh man, talk about when worlds collide! The local R/C park is about to become a Star Trek convention!

The four levels echo levels of radio control mastery. The first is the Tyco is ‘Power Charger Enterprise,’ which, for $20 and comes with no radio controller and will simply fly it around in a circle – presumably on a wired handle setup. Double the price and it comes with an R/C controller. At this level, R/C Captain Kirk wannabes can also indulge their Klingon side with a matching Bird of Prey.

STRC3

The larger, Deluxe Enterprise will cost around $70 and it comes with a touch screen R/C controller that is shaped like a Communicator, while the charger is designed to look like a Tricorder. Talk about a nice attention to detail. Lastly, there’s a HUGE 4 foot version. Both Deluxe versions are also better constructed with stronger materials. Too bad they don’t do saucer separations though.

Look for these Enterprises to be flying around the park in the spring of 2009.
