New Game sends Little Green Army Men to War
Sure, you can pick up a copy of Call of Duty or Medal of Honor and play video games until your eyes bleed, but how about an old school alternative? Miniature playing games have been around since the 70s. I remember not only playing these games based on dragons and knights locked in mortal combat for treasure and points, but also painting tiny lead figures which would act as our doppelgangers in the campaigns that ensued. And in the last 30 years, we’ve seen MPGs in space, in the wild west, in the Star Wars universe, in the not so distant nuclear future, and now, in the wartime past.
The idea is called Combat Storm, it’s a table-top miniature wargame where players use green and tan plastic army men as their game pieces and a large playing area, such as a large table or living room floor as their battlefield. The plastic army men are cheap and can be picked up at any toy store. The rule book for Combat Storm covers rules for driving and using vehicles, including Tanks and Transports, rules for all types of basic land combat, how soldiers engage, what they use, and what missions they go on. There are three three other game variations including Annihilation, Protect the Sergeant, and Capture the Flag. Users even learn to build a proper gaming table – including paper model bombed out ruins, and how to conduct their campaigns.
And the best part is, that Combat Storm works with any set of army men and in any time frame, so anyone can play.
The cost of the rulebook is around $20 and can be found online at CombatStorm.com
