In today’s high tech toy world where everything is about realistic graphics and tactile interactive response, it’s all to often forgotten that the simply joy for a family is to sit around the dining room table playing a board game. Whether Monopoly, Clue, Risk, Battleship or even Life, boards games like these can provide hours of good, quality family time while enjoying some healthy banter and competition.
So, in the spirit of paying tribute to these classic games, we present a series that hopefully will remind you of these fantastic games and rekindle an interest to go get one and get the family together for an evening. And, of course, we start with the granddaddy of them all, MONOPOLY …
Lex Luthor is famous for saying in Superman “You can print money, manufacture diamonds, and people are a dime a dozen, but they’ll always need land. It’s the one thing they’re not making any more.” And that is the spirit of Monopoly – the idea being to acquire as much land as you can and collect the rent until you wipe out your opponent. Along the way, you go to jail, pay luxury taxes, buy and sell railroads. And spend hours with the family doing it.
And, recently, Monopoly has acquired the ability of a chameleon, as numerous special editions have appeals to fans of a wide variety of movies, sports and TV properties. You can play Star Wars Monopoly, Family Guy Monopoly, Lord of the Rings Monopoly, Disney Monopoly … there’s even a special electronic edition – where, instead of money, you have a debit card that either gets credited or debited as you collect rent and buy property.
Cost is aroudn $30 for the special editions, but the classic edition is about $15.
