Classic Board Games – RISK!

RISK!

Risk! Is a game of Global domination, combat and strategy. Game players receive a a set number of armies based on the number of players playing the game. Players then take turns claiming territories in five continents by placing one army piece in each country until all countries are claimed. Then, they reinforce each country until their armies are all deployed. Players then roll to determine game play order.

Players then attach an adjacent country by rolling the three red dice. The defenders roll two white dice. The winner is the highest total on all dice. If the attacker wins, the loser loses an army. Once the armies are depleted from the territory, the attacking army occupies the country and fortifies. An attacker can attack as much as he dares, but once he fortifies, he’s done. Taking a country will yield a reward of a Risk card. Collecting the cards will yield more armies to reinforce as the game goes on.

The strategy comes in on which countries you choose at the beginning, how you fortify each country and how you plan to go about your campaign. The winner (and believe me, it takes awhile) is the one who captures every country and continent on the board.

Other versions include Castle Risk, Risk: Lord of the Rings, Risk: Star Wars Clone Wars, Junior Risk, and others. There’s even a computer game version. Want a real challenge? If you have a weekend to blow, try putting two Risk boards together and playing Two World Risk! or Nuclear Risk (where you roll three 6s and the country is nuked for a set number of turns before you can invade it).

Next time – in keeping with strategy games … STRATEGO!

You bet! You should try “Two World” Risk and Nuclear Risk (if you roll all sixes, the country is nuked for X # of turns and you have to maneuver around it).
