When I read this report that Toys R Us says that there is “huge customer interest” in toys ahead of the release of Paramount’s reboot of STAR TREK, I thought to myself, well heck, my nine year old could’ve told them that. Every time the movie trailers come on the TV, my son goes nuts. And he’s one of the hugest Star Wars fans at 9 years old I know. And even though he’s obsessed with Lego’s, he’s decided he doesn’t want any new Lego toys in favor of getting Trek Toys like the Transporter which has a cool illusion of making an action figure dematerialize. Very cool.
Although, I have to be frank that I’m not too thrilled with the new phaser and communicator designs. I mean, they kept to the original – though updated – design of the Enterprise, brought back the cool red, gold and blue tunics for costumes, but they had to redesign the classic troika of the phaser, communicator and tricorder? I bet they could’ve just kept the original designs and kids would still have wanted them. Anyway, if Toys R Us is right and kids and collectors are jonsin’ over this film enough to want the toys, then it’s going to be a very lucrative summer for Jeffrey.
