Classic NASCAR models make for great summer projects
Summer is a little more than half way done and kids are beginning to fight the boredom of having been there done that. They’ve been on vacation and are back from summer camp. Swimming lessons. Check. Baseball league is over. How does a kid fill the days with an activity that mom and dad will approve of? The answer is, get them into model building.
Models have been around since the 40s and are based on everything from military marvels to space kits to hot rods. There are even dinosaur models. And they start with basic introductory snap together models, to advanced balsa wood models you can then actually fly.
Revell is the name in model building and their 2009 catalog shows a wide array of models that kids would love to build.
NASCAR racers with classic stock cars from the 60s. Famous names like Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, and Parnelli Jones round out these cool looking racers complete with sponsor decals and racing numbers.
SnapTite models are designed to build with no glue or paint and are perfect models to start building with.
But there’s also the entire Star Wars collection with everything from the Millennium Falcon, to the Luke’s famous X-Wing fighter, to the ATAT walker. Entry level modellers can put together the SnapTite versions of both Anakin and Obi’Wan’s Jedi Starfighter. No glue or paint required.
Kids can learn about the Apollo Moon Landings with this cool Apollo model kit.
And to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing, Revell teams up with Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin to create the Rocket Hero series models which include a nifty 1:32 scale of the Apollo Command Module, complete with desk top display base, a 1:48 scale Lunar Landing Model kit that simulates “Tranquility Base” and the first Apollo moon landing, and there’s even a classic, and tall 1:144 Saturn V Rocket kit which gives you both in the traditional stack along with the rocket that winged them to the moon.
Model building gives a sense of accomplishment, can become a lifelong hobby, and in the end, you have a cool looking toy to adorn your room as you begin a new collection. And before you know it, the boredom will disappear.
