Though not ready for release just yet, an OpenChord guitar promises to bring Guitar Hero to reality.
Guitar Hero, and it’s bandish compatriot Rock Band, are popular because they let gamers live the rock god fantasy, even if they can’t play a lick on an axe. But what’s the biggest selling point of the music video game is also it’s major criticism, say music critics who say that while it’s a fun game, it doesn’t teach kids a lick about music (get it?). Well, in the near future, gamers may be able to not only play along with their tunes and score high numbers, they may actually learn to play the guitar they’re pretending to … all thanks to efforts like OpenChord.
Using a real guitar and a WiiMote controller, would be guitarists can work their way around a real guitar fretboard and strum real strings all while trying to set the proper chord and score high numbers. It’s still like playing the game, the only difference is the real life interface. Such is the beauty of the Wii system and a wireless remote capability which can emulate near anything.
But OpenChord isn’t ready for prime time. Not yet (which the embedded video can attest to) as it’s only in a quasi-alpha stage. But as the concept develops, it could not only mean that kids will be able to indulge in the fist of rock fantasy, but it could also turn games like Guitar Hero into a musical learning tool. Not to mention it’ll give bands like RUSH the chance to enjoy their own tunes (Rush was tasked to play some of their own tunes using GH on Letterman and couldn’t! LOL).
So gamers, bookmark OpenChord and pay close attention. Your next GH controller may come from Fender in the near future.
