TOOB is a great entertainment option for immersive video games and movies.
In Imax, the image is so large, that it immerses you literally in the scene. And some use a similar process with domed screens called “OmniMax.” Does the same thing. But how can you capture that immersive iMax style experience at home? With the TooB Domed Screen.
The brainchild of Animator Alex McDonnell, the TOOB (which stands for “Think Out of the Box”) is a domed screen which has a 180 degree projector right at the base of it. There were no Imax style screens for watching TV or playing video games to buy, so he took it upon himself to build the first. And it’s taking off as more people are looking to take their home theaters to the next level. But not just videophiles are after the TOOB. NASA has purchased several TOOB display screens with the goal of using the 3D capability to train astronauts in a virtual environment.
With it's 3d immersive design, TOOB Screen makes games and TV up close and personal.
The screen is domed and measures 3 feet by 6 feet by 3 feet and costs nearly $1500. It’s built with what looks like a PVC plastic frame and screen with 18″ reflectors. The reflectors are what bounce the projected image onto the domed surface. There’s also a version which comes with a Mitubishi 720p DLP Projector with 5.1 Surround Sound.
But, if the price is too much, you can rent a package for a weekend party in 5 hour blocks (with 1/2 hour setup and take down times). There’s also an inflatable version as well that measures 8′ x 16′ for large outdoor parties. The TOOB will work with any HD capable gaming platform.
