Sony PS3s go 3D in 2010 with a firmware update
Get it? D? as in dimension? (crickets) Okay, it’s a really, REALLY lame pun. But you’re remember that Sony is bringing 3D to the Playstation 3, won’t you?
Beginning next near, Sony will be adding a 3D mode to the console which will make 3D games truly 3D. And not just a select few, ALL of them. Turns out that 3D information has always been part of the game code, the technology to support it simply hasn’t been available until now. And what’s sweet is that Sony is making this a firmware update so that ALL PS3s will have 3D capability. Gamers will need an HDTV which supports 3D and an HDMI connection that will sync the TV signal with 3D glasses electronically. This is largely due to the fact that 1080p functions differently on 120 Hz Sets than they will on 240 Hz sets, which provide 100 hz images to each eye. But hey, it’s a small price to pay.
So, if you haven’t taken the HDTV plunge yet, save your pennies until next year. If you have already, you should probably consider putting that new LCD in the bedroom to make room in the den for your new 3D game screen.
