Classic Toys - Green Army Men
One of my favorite characters in the Disney Pixar film Toy Story are the Green Army Men. Now, this is largely due to the “Sarge” character being voiced by R. Lee Ermey (who was actually a Gunnery Sargeant in the Marine Corps). But I do have fond memories of playing army men in my back yard with my brother on the 4th of July with about $50 in fireworks to make it all the more realistic. Well, Green Army Men are back and they’re not just green anymore.
Your basic infantry set of army men usually came in “company size” (about 150 strong) with anywhere from 9 to 15 different poses ranging from land mine detail to laying down to fire to mortar teams. And a real good set based on World War II will pit the Allies (in green) and the Nazi’s (in gray).
But World War II soldiers aren’t the only plastic Army men toys out there. There’s Civil War, Cowboys vs. Indians, even Mid-evil Knights or a Revolitionary war set for a historic touch. And if parents want a more peaceful pursuit, there are firefighters, policemen, and even astronauts, There are even accessories such as jeeps, tanks and more (or, you can be like me and my brother and build models of jeeps and tanks and then use them as battle pieces).
And Toy Story Fans can even get Green Army Men sets based on the characters in the hit Pixar Film in that familiar plastic bucket.
Warfare notwithstanding, Green Army Men is one of those Classic Toys that bring back fond memories of my childhood and could for any child who enjoys playing with them. And the best part is, they’re pretty darn cheap. And chances are, you can find them hanging in the toy isle at a local supermarket.
