Toys from James Cameron's blockbuster epic Avatar come complete with Augmented Reality technology
Although the McDonalds Avatar Happy Meal toys are completely useless and lame, the Mattel toys for the same movie are quite cool. The Mattel Avatar toys have iTag Augmented Reality built in so that kids can make their toys come alive with their computers. This enables characters to appear and interact with the kids.
“The development of our Avatar toy line with the integration of the augmented reality technology marks an entirely new level of innovation in toys,” said Doug Wadleigh, vice president for boys’ action play marketing, Mattel. “Boys will be able to play with the Avatar figures and vehicles in ways that previously could only be imagined.”
The Avatar line will include action figures, vehicles, and creatures all designed with augmented reality in mind. When placed under a PC’s webcam, animated 3D versions of the movies characters will come alive and begin to evade and defend themselves as kids play with the toys. And when any two toys are placed together on the Webcam, the toys will interact with each other.
