Lego Minifigs get officially collectible
With all the special kits from movie tie-ins, MiniFigs have always been collectible. But now, for the first time in its history, Lego sees that the popularity and has decided to offer a collectible line of minifigs for all to amass. The collection will consist of 16 different minifigures, with characters ranging from robots to ninjas, to even a caveman and astronauts. Prices will be about $3.00 USD each. But on the down side, Lego is opting for a random, grab bag like approach, which means duplications are very likely.
With sealed packaging, collectors will essentially have to leave everything to chance, and that’s to Lego’s advantage, economically, or at least that’s the theory. In a world of eBay, and collectors’ forums, there is great opportunity for sales and trading, creating a secondary market for minifigures that more popular than others. It’s really no different than baseball card collections, or the Star Wars minFigure collections that have been made for the last few years.
Lego only gets their own corner of the collectible universe. This will also create value beyond the original sale price. Which, we reckon is the very nature of something being “collectible.”
