Catching the digital wave that was first brought about by the Amazon eBook reader Kindle, and the huge splash brought on by the upcoming iPad by Apple, VTech has announced the first eBook reader for kids called THE FLIP.

Meant for children ages 3 to 7, the Flip will play animated children’s eBooks which are loaded upon them directly. And since there’s no wireless download capability built into it, the price is kept down to about $60 US by no doubt relying on the decades old cartridge technology which plugs each book into the unit like puzzle piece.

But the stories are certain to keep kids occupied with 11 software titles available at launch. These titles include The Little Engine That Could, Disney/Pixar’s Cars, Shrek, Dora the Explorer, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3, Disney Princesses, Olivia, Disney Fairies, Mr. Men and Little Miss, Scooby-Doo and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Each story also contains interactive reading games and a story dictionary, which gives kids the ability to look up words and find even better meaning to parts they don’t understand.

Parents can also keep tabs on their young one’s progress by logging reports online and printing reading certificates with which to reward young readers with pride. And after wading through the initial 11 titles available, more titles will be available for download via the VTech website and will include some free titles to keep kids reading and learning in between buying new titles.
