Used video games are coming to 7-11 Convenience stores

Used video games are coming to 7-11 Convenience stores this Fall

It is often said that when one door closes, another opens. So when Walmart and Best Buy announced it was getting out of the used video game market, who knew that 7-11, in partnership with Game Trading Technologies, would rise up to fill the gap?

“More than 60 percent of US households now have at least one video game console,” said Michael Jester, 7-Eleven category manager for gaming and electronics. “Consumers are searching for convenient ways to stretch their entertainment dollar in this challenging economy.”

If you think about, it makes a lot of sense as Southland has been using 7-11 to sell DVDs, Pre-pay cell-phones and overpriced grocery goods. So why not video games?

Southland Corporation plans to offer the used games in more than 3,000 stores across the country for a price under $20. The question is, can 7-11 offer enough popular titles to actually make shoppers want to buy them? Especially when older games can sell for around $20 that have been unopened in what Sony calls it’s Classic Red Label. And it’s unlikely that they will be getting front line titles which sell for up to $50 or more brand new within weeks of a product launch.

But still, convenience being the relentless pursuit of all, and being that video gamers tend to go for the food faire that is aboriginal to 7-11 environments, who’s to say this won’t be as natural as a duck to water?
