Tron Action Figures come to life in a high tech fashion

Outside the world of Toy Story, an action figure usually comes to life only in the imagination of the child playing with it. But the new Tron action figures come to life with a facial projection technique that was pioneered by Walt Disney for the Haunted Mansion.

Well, that’s I think at least. You remember riding through and seeing talking head of Madame Liotta? The effect was accomplished by filming the actor’s face and then projecting the image on the blank face of the floating head. The result was quite a cool effect of Liotta’s head coming to life. The new Tron Action figure – built by the toy company SpinMaster shows a similar effect that has been dramatically miniaturized and I’m guessing employs a kind of OLED screen to broadcast the facial image as it talks. Check out this video to see the effect in action:

The technique is called “impulse projection” and it allows for clips of the actual characters from the film as they talk. Another cool feature is that like the movie, the action figure’s clothing glows in the same etherial manner as that of the characters in the film.

No word on price or availability, but it sure does amp up the coolness factor for movie toys.
