LEGO digs into Minecraft

by James

Earlier this week, we mentioned that MEGABLOKS was countering LEGO’s movie lines by releasing sets based on video games. Well, looks like LEGO has answered by digging into a licensing agreement with a video game property of their own … the 8 bit obsession known as Minecraft.

The LEGO Minecraft line is the first product that has been released from the LEGO Cuusoo project, the crowd-sourced concept that allows LEGO fans to vote on submitted ideas. When an idea reaches over 10,000 votes, LEGO takes it to the next step. It’s a brilliant idea for fans who’d like to generate some interest for sets they’d like to see, and original ideas even get a piece of the pie, in this case, Minecraft’s creator Mojang.

But while the LEGO Minecraft line will be out in plenty of time for the holidays, I have to admit … I don’t get it. First off, the only real difference is what? That they put together sets of multi colored bricks and 8 bit minifigs? Really? Kids can do that now. I’m just not buying into why anyone would like to pay $35 for a kit to make an 8 bit universe out of LEGOs when they can do that now with the bricks they have.

LEGO Minecraft will be out by August, but you can preorder them now if you’re of the mind.
