NERF Arms GI Joe

You knew it had to happen sooner or later. NERF has joined the Army and has released a set of GI Joe themed N-Strike blasters and foam swords. The toys are part of a massive merchandising tie-in Hasbro has with the upcoming sequel GI Joe: Retaliation, starring Channing Tatum, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, and Bruce Willis.
The first blaster to be leaked out is currently being marketed in Singapore and is dubbed the Ninja Commando Blaster. What it looks like is a standard NERF pump action blaster with a few add ons from the CS6 model and a first person shooter style target reticule. It has also has a rotary drum which carries about 15 rounds of foam darts. Retail is about SGD$69.95 (about $55 USD).

The second GI Joe Foam weapon is a Snake Eyes Blade of Justice foam samauri sword that looks very similar to the N-Force Thunder Fury sword. But what bugs me about this toy is the price … about SGD$49.95 (about $44 USD). That’s a heck of lot to lay out for some foam and no moving parts. Although I’m sure that Hollywood gets it’s cut, it still seems to me that a price point of $14-19.99 is more practical than nearly $50 for a sword. And for that price, the least Hasbro could do is toss in a pair of tickets to see GI Joe Retailiation, which opens June 21, 2012.
UPDATE: Just announced that GI Joe is being delayed until March 29, 2013! Apparently, Paramount wants to do a 3D conversion of it and then save it for the Spring movie season. Not sure that’s going to help much!
