As I kid, I was in hog heaven after getting a Johnny Lightning Hot Wheels race set for Christmas. The next year, it was Sizzlers that Santa choice to reward a year of good behavior with. I miss those Hot Wheels tracks. They gave me hours of racing fun. And in celebration of Hot Wheels fortieth anniversary, and the release of the blockbuster flop Speed Race, Mattel has done it again with the Hot Wheels Speed Racer Sky Jump Track Set. I’m betting it sells at the toy store better than tickets at the box office.

SWPM2

Kids who are reaching the age where strategy games become attractive, and who are obsessed with “a galaxy far, far away,” will love the strategy game known as Star Wars Pocket Models. The concept is pretty simple. Collect trading cards and put together card board space ships, roll some dice, take some damage, rule the galaxy.

Classic Toys: Electric Football

Friday, October 31st, 2008

EFootball

With video games dominating the game playing world of youngsters these days, it’s hard to even get them to look at something so low tech as a metal football field rattling from electric currents while little plastic football men randomly move along in an attempt to drive a fabric football across the goal line. And often, ending up congregating in the corner as the field hums with an annoying buzz. But that’s the allure of Electric Football, a classic game that kids all over the 60s and 70s played with both passion and patience.

GH1

Photographs of upcoming box sets of Hasbros “Galactic Heroes” have been leaked to the gang over at Rebel Scum, depicting scenes from episodes 2 and 4 of the Star Wars epic. The scenes depicted included Escape from Mos Eisley which will include figures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewie, two storm troopers and a desert dewback to ride upon.

“Han and Chewie lead Luke and their passengers to the Millennium Falcon, unaware that Garindan has snitched on them. Sandtroopers on foot and riding a dewback head for the docking bay to stop them.”

Recreate Springfield with these cool Simpson characters

Simpsons 1

Matt Groening has created yet another cool Simpsons toy set with these vinyl Springfield characters. The characters are about 3” tall and sell for about $8.00 each. And as cool as they are, there is a problem that makes me wish to state unequivocally that you shouldn’t buy them. And that’s the fact that Kidrobot, the manufacturer of these toys, are selling them in blind assortment boxes to make it next to impossible to collect the entire 24 figure set without layout a boatload for duplicates and praying to the gods you don’t break the bank before getting them all.

Dark Knight Toys have amazing detail

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Tumbler 1

This Batman Toy Tumbler is one of the most detailed toys you’ll see out there. It’s also one of the most expensive. At 1/6 scale with Batman himself being a foot tall, this Bat Tumbler from Hot Toys is amazing. It comes with working light up headlights, a cockpit that opens by slidingup and down, and deployable breaking flaps. It weighs in at a hefty 28 pounds, which probably explains the stiff cost of $589 … shipping overseas for something like this just ain’t cheap. Too bad it isn’t an R/C as well.

Falcon 1

When we last reported on the first Millenium Falcon toy to come out since 1979, we were hopeful by the press pics that it would be more detailed than it’s forefather. Well now we have more pictures and can see much more detail … and for $160, it’s much better than we thought.
